"Leveraging two revenue management systems: managing contract term discounts while respecting load factors"
Seminar Abstract:
When deploying different systems for various types of pricing, it is important to
analyze the potential interaction between the recommendations of the two
systems. For example, when managing list prices by means of a list price
optimization system, there may be consequences for customers billed with
contractually agreed upon discounts, managed by means of a contract
management system. In this presentation, we will discuss a particular case of
interacting systems in the context of cargo shipping.
Speaker Bio:
Maarten Oosten is currently a Senior Director of Science & Research at PROS. He
joined PROS in the summer of 1999 after holding teaching and research positions
at various schools. Since joining PROS in the summer of 1999, he has contributed
to the successful deployment of several large scale revenue management and
pricing optimization applications. Currently, Maarten manages the science and
research group. Maarten received his M.Sc. in Econometrics in 1988 from the
University of Groningen (The Netherlands) and his Ph.D. in Operations Research
from the University of Maastricht (The Netherlands) in 1996.

"Feeder Schedules Optimization System: A Case Study in Implementing Optimization Systems"
Seminar Abstract:
Feeder Schedules Optimization System is a planning system that was developed by UPS for planning its tractor-trailer movements. After surviving several setbacks in its infancy, the project has been successful in demonstrating the benefits of O.R. to the organization. While some breakthroughs in algorithms were necessary for the success of the project, equally crucial were the developments that took place in the computing environment and the ability of the project team to successfully exploit them.
This talk will discuss the development of the project, the challenges it faced, and how the changing computing environment played a key role in its success. We will also discuss how UPS is attempting make O.R. an integral part of its planning systems.
Speaker Bio:
Ranganath S. Nuggehalli is a lead scientist in the Operations Research group at UPS. His group is responsible for developing optimization algorithms for use in advanced operations planning and monitoring systems. He joined UPS in 1990 obtaining Ph.D. in Operations Management from Purdue University. During the last 15 years, he has been involved with the development and implementation of several advanced planning systems that are reshaping UPS operations.
